Spatial Sketch Support Architecture Design

Even nowadays CAD applications contain high capacity modeling functions, but it still couldn't replace the traditional design media (such as paper sketching and model making), which could demonstrate the craft sense extended from our hand skills. Using traditional design media, designers are able to extend their bodily dynamic expression and reveal handicraft sense in design. Therefore, this research is to propose CAD applications can redound on designer's perspectives to providing the opportunities in expressing characteristics of fine art. Spatial sketch system (SS-System) demonstrates a new framework of applying hands in virtual modeling. SS-System solves the problems: 1) Unable to freely execute the spatial ideas; 2) Getting lost from the original design ideas, while manipulating computer-aided design. SS-System helps designers in presenting their ideas rapidly and creating various associations of design prototypes during the development. The nimbleness of hands helps designers in creating the sense of craft forms.

1:1 Interior Design in mixed Augmented Reality

Architecture and interior design is usually done through 2D drawings in smaller scale. The drawings are hard to be interpreted by general people. Therefore, extra design efforts are taken for the communication between the designer and their customer. In fact, the drawing in smaller scale is one kind of design method taught in traditional academy of architecture design in order to simulate the in-scale spatial design. The designer, who goes through the traditional learning process, will be capable of using 2D drawing for design thinking. Through learning and adapting to the method, the designer will be able to transform spatial ideas into spatial drawings in smaller scale.
Unfortunately, the usage of miniature 2D drawings in design process always causes the loss of design details and misses the potential opportunities inspired by the real-world reality. In this circumstance, this research will be dedicated to the 1:1 augmented reality interior design system (1:1-ARIDS) which will help users to have their design in real-world environment. 1:1-ARIDS includes two wearable devices: laser-pointer for 3D input and VR-glasses for visual displays. The combination actually helps designers in modeling and seeing design outcomes in real-time. 1:1-ARIDS is trying to enhance the communications between the designers and proprietors. And it also helps designers in expressing their design ideas more clearly by involving users into the experiential design process.
